“Got Cock?” By the “Revolting Cocks”

By Jonathan Bradwell.

Let’s set this straight: The ‘Revolting Cocks’ have never, do never and will never chase the mainstream, attuned and comfortable trends of any style. It’s just not in their heart. However, what is in their gnarled nature is the dexterity to produce smutty tracks in their own sculpted post modern industrial way. The dishevelled sound is confrontational, taking their previously indirect, lucidly explicit lyrics, and propelling them right in your face. Josh Bradford’s melodies are intense, and kinky lyrics such as “She needs to feel a touch, and I feel it is my duty”, are jocular but appropriate on this production.

Even though putting the two most strapping tracks at the beginning of an album can be an aberration, “Trojan Horse” and “Filthy Senoritas” set up the necromantic and adrenaline fuelled world of the “Revolting Cocks” supremely, making it effortless for those unknown to the band to become conclusively seduced. Sin Quirin uses a creamy reverberated sound to create a synthetic landscape so outstretched the tracks could surely be at home on one of the eccentric antecedent releases. With a durable synth background in addition to the guitars, these tracks are by far the most approachable out of the eleven present.

Half way through adoring this album and a hindrance becomes illusive. The pop rock doctrinal feel is convulsed to a neoteric level, and a parade of more industrial tune’s appear. Although tastefully created, I can imagine these won’t be commended by everyone. “Fuck Money” has some bizarre drum work, but the undisguised use of samples and screamed vocals blocks up the flow of the album. Not to fear though, the album is then compensated evenly with danceable hit “Juice”. The bass and guitars juxtaposed constitute a slightly progressive riff, with a pinch of, well, lyrics about types of Juice!

As with all ‘Revolting Cocks’ albums, there is habitually a miniature thrill in the form of a cover or an erratic remix. This time, we have both. This is a cover of “2 Live Crew’s” song ‘Me so Horny’, which only one track later is remixed with an intimation of House and Dub. This approach to remixes reminds us that Al Jourgensen, although throwing in the towel and discontinuing ‘Ministry’, still has a behomothic part to play in the “Revolting Cocks”. Although no briefings for a “Got Cock?” remix album have been announced yet, this singular track will satisfy us just for now.

Although not quite what I contemplated for album number nine, the band have forged ahead in doing what they do best, and predictably flourishing. “Got Cock?” continues on companionably from “Sexo – Olympico”. Where at one time I would have summed the band up as an electronic dance band with an underlying rock and roll feel, I would have to avow, this has now been turned on its head. One point that stands out in the overall production and mix of this album; The bass guitar has finally being aloud to prevail and conquer in Al Jourgensen’s sex fuelled, dangerous and loud rock sinfonietta.
