The “Ear Splitting Redneck Disco From Hell”: The ‘Revolting Cocks’ in the eyes of Luc Van Acker

By Jonathan Bradwell

Belgium, 1982: A personality branded as Luc Van Acker sprung onto the music panorama, with his ambient and fresh approach. Three years afterwards, he grew to be one of the innovative and founding members of the ‘Revolting Cocks’, who Acker describes as an “Ear splitting disco from Hell”. Now on the go (through the embracing of many new members) for what is the Twenty second complete year, they have put out eight albums and copious consequent releases. Subsequent to trawling the internet to contact a ‘Revolting Cocks’ affiliate, I decided to send an e-mail to Acker himself, who respectfully answered the questions for this piece.

In terms of the writing role Acker has in the ‘Revolting Cocks’, he went on to describe his influences to me: They were undoubtedly diverse and unclassifiable. “I myself have a Krautrock – Post Punk upbringing”, sighting bands such as “Killing Joke” and “Gang of Four” as unquestionable influences. Along with producers such as “Conny Plank”, Acker also expands on his ideas from the inspiration passed to him from “Art”, “Books and Movies”.

The ‘Revolting Cocks’ is more than just music; it appears as a lifestyle where rocking hard is imperative! When asked whether Acker finds the ‘Revolting Cocks’ the most demanding of the projects he is caught up in, his answer was quite the opposite to what I expected: “No, Rev Co is a natural way of life for me… fits like a condom”. No doubt, it must be indisputably fun to be involved in a movement that has lasted so long notwithstanding much legal and social debate. Only Acker and Jourgensen are the original members still playing with Rev Co today! In Chris Connelly’s book “Concrete, Bullet proof, invisible and fried: My life as a Revolting Cock”, another ‘Revolting Cocks’ member sheds his memoirs of the time he was involved in one of rocks most alternative bands.

Tarnished for their untamed onstage behaviour (including live cattle and acts of a sexual nature), it came as no bombshell that in 1990, Douglas Hurd, functioning as Britain’s Home Secretary, attempted to refuse each member of Rev Co work permits, meaning touring in the UK would be blocked. When asked how Acker reflects on this legal move, he stated “We all got in anyway and had a great time… Sorry Douglas”. The band was also cornered by the PMRC “banning list” for the tune “No Devotion”, in the mid 80’s, when the moral values of the band were often shunned upon.

In the 2000’s time came to pass the band on, seeing the younger new-fangled recruits substitute some of the former members. One of the chief dissimilarity flanked by ‘then’ and ‘now’ was the introduction of Joshua Bradford, front man and character of the group. According to Acker, the most up-to-date line up is a divergent bunch compared to the originals that were thrown out of a Texas tavern being called “A bunch of Revolting Cocks”. Acker told me: “The new band is all new and young… they are candy and polite people”. But perceptibly the music still has the old school mind-set!

When chatting about Rev Co, one name constantly comes foremost: Al Jourgensen. I took the opportunity to query Acker about the power of ‘Alien’ Jourgensen on his project nowadays, from his more back seat approach. “In the writing process Al is like a guiding light and functions like a producer/mentor. Without him, Rev Co would never have happened. These days most songs still have a big Al part”. The ‘Revolting Cocks’ are at present signed to 13th Planet records, owned and ran by Al Jourgensen himself. This label has released four of Rev Co’s productions including “Cocked and Loaded”.

Coming back down to the role of Luc Van Acker, his days as a ‘Revolting Cock’ are not over yet! “I would love to do a new album but it would sound like a DJ remix album… Drum and Bass”. However, this idea also brought him to say that “Al would not like it”. Touching on everything from a House feel to a laid back electro disco feel, it is this aspect of utter diversity and complete unpredictability of what to expect from a Rev Co release that keeps them so exciting!

For those providential enough to have grabbed a ticket whilst the ‘Revolting Cocks’ are on their tour, are in for a bona fide luxury according to Luc Van Acker. When asked what potential surprises are in store for those present at the travelling party, he exclaimed that the “Jim Rose Circus is our support act”. For those who are unacquainted, the ‘Jim Rose Circus’ is an unconventional spectacle which prides itself in its unusual acts. Take for example the “anal painting” operation, where paint is blasted from one of the performer’s anal cavities into the face of an unpaid helper. Now that’s different…

As for the UK, the ‘Revolting Cocks’ have no authorized strategy to lay waste to our fine coast. When asked about the UK, Acker mentioned nothing other than European dates, mentioning that he does “Believe we might play some festivals…2010…In Germany this summer”, and that they are “Playing Paris”. It seems the ‘Revolting Cocks’ are not a band that focuses on the matriculate preparation of each and every detail, but take it as it comes. Van Acker said “But I only get called at the last minute”, implying that the running of Rev Co is unrefined and on the borders.

So there we have it, The ‘Revolting Cocks’ with an insight from an actual original and dependable link in the chain of the perpetual road show. From this interview, I would say the ‘Revolting Cocks’ are exactly what Acker claimed they were at the start: an “Ear splitting disco from hell”, with both the compositions and the members creating the carnage often found situated around them. For those who can’t get enough of this magical contraption; then check out “Rev Co World” (http://www.myspace.com/revcoworld), Luc Van Ackers tribute band to the ‘Revolting Cocks’. I hope you enjoyed the traverse…
