“Revolting Cocks” – “Sex-O Olympic-O”

By Jonathan Bradwell

In terms of Al Jourgensen’s copious raunchy, experimental and audacious projects as a musician with a musical biography that that covers so many different areas that he is seen as a kind of an icon, the Revolting Cocks latest instalment comes out grimier, filthier and more utterly brilliant than you could imagine.

With the release of “Sex-O Olympic-O” earlier in the year, Rev Co established there place at the top of the industrial dimension. This sex fuelled escapade, touching on subjects that unquestionably do not come up in day to day exchange (never mind in alternative music) it makes for an interesting listen to say the very least.

Furthermore, the sound of this album is unreservedly inconceivable. Take the track “Cousins”, with a cliché vocal line and an upbeat chord progression, with the supplementary consistency of electronic drums and emphasised synth hooks thrown in for good mixture, it all adds up to pull in the listener. It is utterly stimulating, refreshing and different that the song meaning slips from under our consciousness (find out for yourselves!)

For those searching for the commercial songs, it is comprehensible to say that the transfer in feeling of songs such as “Abundant Redundancy” can be a slight bit off-putting. Although creative and musically dazzling, this song, and just one or two of the other later tracks that take listeners back to the roots of Rev Co, seem to lose the mainstream focus this album so brilliantly kicks off with. However, those who have followed Al Jourgensen’s music career from the start will recognize that such a swing is not that odd in his productions.

Listening through this album for what must be the fiftieth time, insertion of a genre or any form of label that can be attached to this piece of music can prove be difficult. It has a definitive rock feel, but also an industrial sound, and most unpredictably, a retro disco dance room feel; Take the wittiness that is mid track “I’m not gay”.

Beautifully packaged, with an album foreword which attempts to identify in some way what you will be about to hear, this is a must buy for anyone with a love for hardcore party feel music. It feels like what electro music would sound like with a full on band.

Recently the release of “Sex-O MiXXX-O” has proved a further treat to Rev Co fans. The original album here was placed in good faith in the hands of other renound artists, as well as Luc van Acker, the Revolting Cocks guitarist and mastermind, to bring into being the re-mix album to “Sex-o Olympic-o”. The noise fashioned is another must here. The “Robo Banditos” remix was sampled on the bands MySpace before release, and was streamed greatly by the fans.

Although very dissimilar to anything produced by this band in the past, it certainly was a surprise. With an extensive tour in pursuit of the album, Revolting Cocks yet again prove there dedication to their aim. With not one band song, and an appealing and unique feel to each, this really is a must hear.
